Things to consider

6 Things to Consider Before Purchasing Your Next Range Hood Fan

Range hoods are a great way to prevent grease from building up in your kitchen, but they can only do so much. One of the most important things you need to consider when purchasing a range hood is what kind of fan it uses. Here are six things that will help you decide which one is best for your home:

1. Type of fan

The first thing you need to decide is what type of fan you want. There are two main types of fans – centrifugal and squirrel cage.

Centrifugal fans are more powerful and can move more air, but they also make a lot of noise. Squirrel cage fans are less powerful, but they are much quieter.

2. Material

The material your fan is made of will have a lot to do with the quality and how long it lasts. You can find range hood fans that are made from stamped steel, stainless steel, or aluminum – each one has its pros and cons.

Stamped steel is very inexpensive but also pretty thin so you’ll need an extra layer of insulation to keep the noise down. Stainless steel is more expensive, but it will last longer and is easier to clean.

Aluminum is a good compromise between the two – it’s not as pricey as stainless steel, but it still has some durability.

3. Fan speed settings

Most range hood fans have at least three fan speed settings, but some have more. If you have a lot of cooking done in your kitchen, you’ll want a fan with multiple speed settings to match your needs.

4. Air flow control

This is an important feature if you don’t want the range hood fan to be blowing directly on you while you cook. With air flow control, you can adjust the direction of your fan to make sure you’re getting enough ventilation but not too much.

A good range hood should also have an air flow control on/off switch so that you don’t waste energy when it is not needed.

5. Installation type and location

Range hoods come in both installed models and portable versions. If you have a lot of kitchen countertop space, an installed range hood is going to be your best option. However, if you don’t want a permanent fixture in your home or plan on moving often, a portable unit will work great for you.

6. Sound level

Range hoods come with different decibel ratings so make sure you pick one that is appropriate for your needs. If you have a small kitchen and don’t want the range hood to be too loud, look for one with a low decibel rating.

Conversely, if you have a large kitchen and need all  surethe help you can get in terms of ventilation, go for a unit with a high decibel rating.
